Vice President, Business Development

Summary Description
Business Development is an integral part of our growth strategy, and we’re looking for an experienced Business Development leader to help us shape and execute this strategy by building a pipeline of opportunities with industry partners. The successful candidate will primarily focus on identifying and evaluating research, development and commercial acquisition and partnership opportunities and will also collaborate with colleagues to structure, negotiate and close transactions to drive substantial value and growth. This position reports directly to the Chief Business Development and Legal Officer and is based in Redwood City, CA.


  • Partner with PaxVax’s senior leadership team and the Board to further develop, shape, and execute our growth strategy with the goal to create substantial value
  • Lead efforts to identify, evaluate, and develop research, development and commercial acquisition and partnership opportunities
  • Build a pipeline of partnership opportunities by identifying and evaluating appropriate partners and assets and collaboration opportunities
  • Collaborate with colleagues to structure, negotiate and close deals
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for PaxVax’s Business Development activities
  • Lead the development of processes that result in business success and maximum value
  • Support the negotiation, drafting and implementation of acquisition agreements with external organizations to support research, development and commercial goals
  • Help manage deal and portfolio investment plan expenditures and delivery against goals
  • Develop and deliver presentations and manage diligence processes
  • Perform analytical preparatory work and provide diligence support for all transactions (i.e., assessment of the science underlying assets and opportunities, comparable deal analysis, financial modeling and simulations, NPV analysis, preparing and managing diligence files, financing documents etc.).


  • Advanced scientific degree, preferably in bacteriology, immunology or virology, with at least 15+ years of relevant industry experience in biotech/pharma; additional finance degree (e.g., MBA) is a plus; experience in vaccines is preferred
  • Aptitude to quickly understand existing and new science and technology and a proven ability to evaluate and advise on viable product candidates
  • Comfortable working in an environment where idea to implementation happens swiftly
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying value creation opportunities and executing on a plan to ensure the value is capitalized on
  • Exceptional oral presentation and written communication skills; ability to appropriately share information and ideas with various groups (i.e., partners, colleagues, senior management, Board etc.)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with many different internal and external constituencies
